I love making this hat to be given away or sold as part of a set with the chunky baby booties. They go really nicely together as a gift for a new baby or pregnant mummy. You can find the matching chunky baby booties here.
This hat is available in first size or newborn. To make the hat, you will need a 6mm crochet hook for first size, a 6.5mm hook for newborn, up to 30g of chunky yarn, a tape measure, a pair of scissors and a yarn needle. If you want to add a pom pom, you will also need a pom pom maker.
The finished first size hat has a diameter of 4″ and is 5.25″ high. The finished newborn hat has a diameter of 4.25″ and is 5.5″ high. Please note that I tend to crochet quite tightly, so you may need to use a different sized hook to achieve these measurements. Measure the diameter at the end of row 3 to check your gauge.
Chunky Baby Beanie (Free Crochet Pattern)
- 1. make a magic loop, ch2, work 10dcs in loop, join with slst in top of 1st dc, pull centre yarn tail tight to close magic loop (10)
- 2. (inc row) ch2, turn, work 2dcs in st at base of ch and each st around, join with slst in top of 1st dc (20)
- 3. (inc row) ch2, turn, work 2dcs in st at base of ch, dc in next st, *2dcs in next st, dc in next st*, repeat from *-* around, join with slst in top of 1st dc (30)
- 4-8. ch2, turn, work dc in st at base of ch and in each st around, join with slst in top of 1st dc (30)
- 9. ch1, turn, fpdc around 1st st of previous row, *bpdc around next st of previous row, fpdc around next st of previous row*, repeat from *-* around to end, join with slst in top of 1st fpdc, bind off and weave in ends
- 10. make a pom pom and attach to the top of the hat
