Crochet Brussels Sprouts

Brussels sprouts are for life, not just for Christmas, although I know plenty of people don’t agree. They’re one of my favourite vegetables so we have them all year round and I thought it would be funny to make some crochet sprouts for Christmas stocking fillers.

To make your own you will need green chunky yarn (or two strands of double knit yarn held together), a 5mm crochet hook, a pair of scissors, a yarn needle, some scrap black yarn and some toy filling.

  • 4. Remove the stitch marker and reattach the stitch to your hook, ch1, turn, hdc2tog around, join with a slst in top of 1st st, bind off and weave in ends (5)

Things You Can Crochet in Less Than One Hour

Before I started my craft fairs and markets, I didn’t really give any thought to how long things would take me to crochet. I just made what I wanted and let it take as long as it took. But as soon as I started having to price things, I quickly realised that those things that took me a few days to make were not good things to try to sell at a craft fair. You might get lucky and find someone who really values your work and is willing to pay you fairly for it but unfortunately most people who don’t crochet don’t realise how long things can take.

My time is very precious at the moment, with two young children to look after, another on the way, aswell as a house and a husband to look after. I had to build my craft fair inventory with things that I could make in less than one hour to make sure I could actually sustain my business and be paid fairly for my time. I spent a while looking through my patterns and trying to come up with quicker ways to make things, and wrote a few new patterns perfect for selling at craft fairs and markets and I wanted to share my findings. All of the projects below take me less than one hour to make so are perfect for selling or for last minute gifting.

Chunky Baby Booties (Free Crochet Pattern)

I have been making tons of these little baby booties to sell at my markets and craft fairs and they always go down really well as a gift for a new baby or pregnant mummy.

The booties are available in first size or newborn. To make them, you will need a 6mm crochet hook for first size, a 6.5mm hook for newborn, up to 30g of chunky yarn, a tape measure, a pair of scissors and a yarn needle. You could substitute the chunky yarn for two strands of double knit (light worsted) yarn held together.

VIDEO

The finished first size booties have a sole length of 3.75″. The finished newborn booties have a sole length of 4”. Please note that I tend to crochet quite tightly, so you may need to use a different sized hook to achieve these measurements. Measure the sole at the end of row 2 to check your gauge.

The booties are part of a set. You can find the matching chunky baby hat here.

Twisted Headband Earwarmer (Free Crochet Pattern)

I love making headband earwarmers to keep our ears nice and cozy when winter starts to hit and the temperature drops. The Twisted Headband Earwarmer is so easy and quick to make but looks harder than it is because of the twist in the top. The full PDF pattern has instructions for five sizes to fit from newborn to adult and is now available on my Etsy shop, but I wanted to share the teen to adult size here aswell.

To make your own, you will need about 25g double knit (light worsted) yarn, an 8mm crochet hook, some scissors and a yarn needle. I used two strands of the double knit yarn held together throughout the pattern but you could substitute for chunky yarn if you prefer.

Crochet Christmas Tree (Free Pattern)

Halloween is over which means Christmas has started and my pumpkins and autumn decorations are all in the process of being switched out for winter decorations. This is the first little ornament set I decided to make and I love how quickly they make up and how absolutely adorable they look!

This pattern is for a medium sized tree, which measures approximately 4.5” tall. You can easily add or remove rows to make a shorter or taller tree and I love having three sizes stacked together to create a little display. To make your own medium tree, you will need super chunky yarn (I used around 25g of King Cole Big Value Super Chunky in Forest), a 7mm crochet hook, some scissors, some toy stuffing and a yarn needle. I also like to hot glue a little wooden star to the top for decoration, but they look just as cute without.

Crochet Christmas Tree (Free Pattern)

Pumpkin Patch Cup Cozy (Free Crochet Pattern)

It’s nearly Halloween, which means nearly the end of pumpkin season here in England, but I wanted to squeeze in a few more pumpkin related patterns because I’m not ready for it to be over yet. I made a cute pumpkin patch cup cozy which my son immediately stole, so I had to make another one for myself. I love the way the bobbles look like tiny pumpkins!

This pattern uses a 5dcb stitch, which is also known as the bobble stitch. To work a 5dcb you will need to work five unfinished double crochets into the same space, then finish the stitch by pulling the yarn through all of the loops on the hook. The bobble will then need to be popped through to the other side to form the pumpkins.

To make your own, you will need a 6mm crochet hook, some orange and green double knit yarn, which will be used two strands held together throughout the pattern, a pair of scissors, a yarn needle and a delicious drink to wrap when you are done.

Autumn Leaves Falling Down Garland

I really love this time of year, autumn is my favourite season and I live for the temperatures cooling down slightly and the leaves changing colour and falling off the trees. With that in mind, I really wanted to make some autumn leaves decor to have in my house. I made some different coloured leaves but wasn’t really sure how to display them in my house. In the end I decided on a little garland to hang them all above my fireplace and I think it looks so cute and cosy now!

To make your own autumn leaf garland, you will need a 6mm crochet hook, double knit or chunky yarn in red, orange, yellow, brown and green, a pair of scissors and a yarn needle. If you are using double knit yarn, use two strands held together. Chunky yarn can be used as a single strand.

Chunky Pixie Hat Free Crochet Pattern (3-24m)

Now that the weather has started to cool down, I knew I wanted to make some cute pixie hats for my children to wear, and some to sell at market. I love these hats, especially for babies and toddlers because they are not as easy for them to get off and don’t fall off as easily as beanies, so I knew those little ears would be kept toasty and warm.

To make your own you will need about 50g of chunky yarn, I used Stylecraft Special Chunky, a 8mm crochet hook, some scissors, a 20mm button and a yarn needle. A fluffy pom pom is optional but adorable.

I crochet quite tightly so you may need to play around with hook sizes to get the required hat size. My finished hat is 6.5” wide and 7.5” tall which means you need a starting rectangle of around 14” x 6.5”.

Chunky Pixie Hat (3-24m)

Main:

  • 1. ch35, dc in 3rd ch from hook and across (33)
  • 2-9. ch2, turn, dc in st at base of ch and across (33)
  • 10. fold in half lengthwise with right sides together, to make a bonnet shape, slip stitch the back long seam together then bind off and turn the seam to the inside of the hat
  • 11. with right side facing, join yarn in the first chain of the first row, ch1, sc in same st, sc2tog, *sc in next st, sc2tog*, repeat from *-* around to last st, bind off and weave in ends (22)

Neck:

  • 1. with wrong side facing and top of hat pointing down, rejoin yarn in bottom corner st (first stitch of row 11), ch1, sc in st at base of ch and next st, sc in the end of the next 18 dc rows, sc in last 2sts (22)
  • 2-3. ch1, turn, sc in st at base of ch and across (22)
  • 4. ch1, do not turn, hdc in st at base of ch, ch1, hdc in same st
  • 5-8. ch1, turn, (hdc, ch1, hdc) in previous rows chsp
  • 9. ch1, sc in st at base of ch, sc in chsp, sc in last st, bind off
  • 10. securely attach a button to the other side of the neck and weave in all your ends
